Flashpoint Creative Arts is an arts organization whose mission is to promote improvisation as an invaluable life-skill. Improvisation is instantaneous creativity and problem-solving. Everyone already improvises – any verbal conversation is a form of improvisation. The convergence of intuition and rational thought, improvisation has diverse applications not only in music and the arts but in many facets of daily life. In a cultural environment of rapid change, improvisatory skills can help us adapt, innovate, problem-solve and overcome the fear of failure, and to embrace new challenges with confidence.
Yet today improvisation is rarely nurtured. Once a vital component of classical music, it has all but disappeared from that realm. While it remains the core element of jazz, in an environmentof of dwindling support for arts education there is no longer a guarantee that audiences have the frame of reference to understand or enjoy the improvisatory performances they attend.
Flashpoint’s goal is to promote greater understanding of and participation in the art of improvisation with innovative artistic and educational experiences that draw people more deeply into the improvisatory process. It seeks to take improvisation beyond the realm of Jazz performance to a wider demographic, including general audiences, arts practitioners in other disciplines, the professional education community, the corporate community, and young, talented artists culturally at risk. It provides networking opportunities for professional improvisers from various disciplines to collaborate, perform together and share their artistic processes. It also offers a “Jazz as Therapy” initiative for students with special needs, in partnership with Little Friends of Naperville and made possible by the Rotary Foundation.
Flashpoint will be co-presenter of the North Central College Jazz Faculty Concert Series for its 2018-19 season. The eight-concert series features various members of the internationally-known faculty of the college’s esteemed Jazz Studies Program. All concerts are presented on Friday evenings at 8:00 pm. in the Madden Theatre, Wentz Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. A “Question/Answer” session will follow each concert to give audiences an opporunity to engage directly with the featured artists.
