Care for Cars is a partnership between the private sector and non-profits, working together to provide affordable car repair for low income residents in order to conduct job searches or retain employment.
Transportation has been cited as the most significant barrier to employment for low income residents in suburban areas. With limited access to public transportation, often necessary car repairs can prevent low income employees from getting to work on-time and lead to absenteeism.
Clients are referred to Care for Cars through an application process that includes a referral sheet from a qualified social service agency. Only case workers and job coaches from social service agencies may refer clients to apply for funding. Applicants must live or work in DuPage County and may not be self referred. An application is sent to the intake coordinators at Care for Cars who will then evaluate the car repair needs and cost through their approved mechanics.
Clients are required to pay 20% or a maximum of $200 – whichever is lowest of the retail cost of the repair. Not all repairs are covered.
