Continuing on with our Wheaton Classic coverage, the Waubonsie Valley warriors start their pool play games facing off against one of the hosts, Wheaton North at Wheaton North.
Warriors trailing by one on the first set, Rachel Hickey goes for the tip but the Falcons are ready for it and send it back over. Next attempt, courtesy of Gabi Croll with the roll shot to tie the game at 9s.
Wheaton North in control later in the first but Aryanna Ruffin keeps the warriors in it with the kick kill from the middle, WV now 18-16.
And then Waubonsie is able to take the lead after being tied at 22 thanks to Gabi Croll’s ace.
Set point now and neither team is rolling over, Warriors looking to end it after climbing back… Melissa Walden gets the nod to put this game away and that’s exactly what she does, WV takes set 1 25-22.
Second set is a little bit of a different story. After Wheaton North makes the great save and sends the free ball over Ruffin is able to finish the point with the kill. Warriors up 10-3.
Few points later and the Falcons are the ones that send the warriors running as Amee Beedle gets the kill to cut Waubonsie’s lead down, 12-6
The second set is where the Warriors really start to click as Wheaton North powers one out of bounds for Waubonsie to take the two set victory. The would defeat Lemont in their second game and move on to play in the gold bracket of the tournament.
