The fall of 2012 was jam packed with outstanding local teams and athletes and there is plenty of hardware lining the halls to prove it. Both Neuqua Valley and Benet academy football made program history in 2012. The Redwings not only won the daunting East Suburban Catholic league title, but made it to the 7A state semi finals for the first time. Neuqua Valley also made its first ever state semi trip in class 8A, thanks to a thrilling quarterfinal win over rival Waubonsie Valley.
Naperville North boys golf brought home its second state trophy in three years in 2012. The Huskies finished second as a team and senior Raymond Knoll led the way, finishing with the third best score in the tournament.
Naperville North girls cross country as usual put forth an incredible effort at Detweiller Park. The Huskies raced to the state championship, the fifth in program history and the first since 2005.
Naperville Central boys soccer made it all the way to the state championship game for the second consecutive season thanks to 30 goals from star senior Pat Flynn. Unfortunately for the Redhawks, the 2012 title game against Warren ended the same as 2011, with a heartbreaking one goal loss in overtime.
At the state girls swim meet it was Neuqua Valley making the biggest splash. Gia Dalesandro stole the show with state titles in the 200 IM and the 100 fly, helping the Wildcats earn a third place trophy.
A lot of talent from the 2011 state champion Benet girls volleyball team returned in 2012 and the Redwings did not let it go to waste. The Benet girls took down New Trier, bringing home the state championship for the second straight year while posting a 40-2 record on the season.
Marty Miller’s girls bowling program at Waubonsie Valley had earned a couple state trophies over the years, but it all came together for the Warriors in the winter of 2013. WV won the program’s first state championship and came within 21 pins of setting a new state record.
After Naperville North girls badminton shared a state championship in 2012, it was crosstown rival Naperville Central bringing home a state trophy in 2013. Alisa Liu’s third place singles finish clinched a tie for the runner up trophy for the Redhawks.
Waubonsie Valley boys tennis did not have a stellar 2013 season as a team, but at the state meet, senior Eric Marbach finished the best season in school history as the state runner up. He finished the year 29-1 and his state performance catapulted the Warriors to an 11th place team finish at state, the best in program history.
Neuqua baseball finished the season with 30 wins and the third trip to state in program history and the first since 2008. The Wildcats added the state 4th place trophy to the school’s every expanding trophy case.
For the third season in a row, the Naperville North girls soccer team found themselves in the state championship game. And for the 2nd straight season, coach Steve Goletz and the Huskies raised the state championship trophy in front of their fans after knocking off Hinsdale Central 2-1.
Season 6 of NSW was another year that brought a cavalcade of championships across a wide range of sports to the Naperville area. Faces both familiar and new made history and memories that will last a lifetime.
