It can be a challenge to select the first team profile of the season, no state trophies have been handed out and some sports have played only a handful of games. So why don’t we start with a team that has started the year with over ten consecutive victories?
Benet Academy girls volleyball is starting off 2016 by doing what they’ve done throughout this decade, racking up the wins. Coming off a heartbreaking, three set, super sectional loss, to eventual state champion St. Francis, the three-time state champion Redwings bring back a roster, stocked full of D-1 talent.
Setter Sara Nielsen and libero Lauren Barnes are prep volleyball preseason All-Americans. Both have signed their letters of intent to play at Minnesota next season.
Veronica Snelling gives Benet a third preseason all-American. The senior outside hitter is going to Division one Missouri State next fall.
But It’s not just the seniors carrying the load for the Redwings. Junior Lily Johnson brings 6’2 size and power as an outside hitter. Junior Sydney Relihan and freshman Hattie Monson have also contributed to B-A’s perfect start. Senior Gretchen Rudel is another tall outside hitter, helping the team earn the Benet Invitational championship in late August, getting the season off on the right foot.
With all the talented teams standing in the way, a 4th state title will be a challenge, but this year’s Redwings have the size, talent and experience to bring home another piece of state hardware in November.
