With spring officially here, and baseball officially underway, NSW’s Charlie Edward bestows upon us a sneak peek of our Naperville-area baseball teams in part one of this two-part preview.
Strong pitching is a common theme in part one of our 2016 high school baseball preview.
Waubonsie Valley’s storylines all center around the pitching, which has them strongly favored to win a third straight conference championship. Brandon Peterson returns for his senior year, and he’ll have to follow-up on gaudy numbers from a season ago; a 6-1 record with a 1.09 ERA. But the depth behind him is even more impressive. Jason Neville returns, boasting a 2015 ERA of 1.34. Juniors Alex Schram and Danny Miller top off a marvelous string of pitchers.
Naperville Central’s pitching is sure to keep fans in the seats, too. Led by the Texas Christian commit, Ryan Eierrman. The Redhawks have an almost sure win to look forward to any time this guy is on the mound. If Peterson’s 1.09 ERA left you breathless, cut it in half to find Eierrman’s ERA of .56, to go along with 114 strikeouts and a sparkling 8-1 record. The Redhawks will trot out Michigan State commit to follow him up too. Zac Bianucci has been rumored by many to have improved mightily over the off-season.
Scott Lawler’s Benet Red Wings don’t have a star-studded pitching staff, but they do have the magic touch. Last year’s unlikely late-season run to a regional title was led by the likes of Dan Sobolewski and Alex Tassos. The team is comprised of multi-sport athletes, as well, like Josh Tumpane, Bobby Ernsting, and Jake Barnhart. Like Benet’s boys basketball team, it doesn’t have a big gun, but it has enough collectively to do damage in the ESCC.
In part two, we’ll preview the Huskies, Mustangs, and Wildcats. Until then, I’m Charlie Edward reporting for NSW.
