Benet Academy taking on Joliet West in the Class 4-A Super-Sectional at Northern Illinois University. The Redwings are back in the Super-Sectional for the second time in three years. A young Joliet West team beat Oswego in the Lockport Sectional Final to make it this far.
The Tigers got out to a hot start, going up 9-2 at one point in the first, taking an 11-6 lead into the second. That’s when the Redwings started making shots. James Dockery and Jack Nolan both knocked down a pair of threes as Benet took control of the game with an 8-0 run to start the quarter. The Redwings scored 26 points in the second alone, taking a 32-23 lead into halftime.
Tigers didn’t back down, making a run of their own, cutting the lead down to 35-31 midway through the third. But the Redwings had a response for every Joliet West attack, outscoring the Tigers 22-16 maintaining a 54-39 lead heading to the fourth.
Joliet West turned up the defensive pressure, forcing back-to-back steal and scores making it an eight-point game. Benet Academy stood tall, making its free throws down the stretch and knocking off the Tigers 67-59. Redwings advance to Peoria where they will face perennial power Simeon in the state semifinal.
