It’s the quarterfinals of the Red Varsity Division in the Blackhawk Cup. Barrington enters the game as the number seven-seed taking on second ranked Benet Academy.
Redwings having trouble hanging onto the puck early on, turning the puck over in their own zone, allowing Colby Osterhues to get two good whacks at it before Tom Mulica slides it past Jake Barnhart for the game’s opening goal.
In the third period, Mitch Plonka can’t corral the lob pass and that spells trouble for Benet. Parker Ritter gets control of the loose puck and snaps home the top shelf wrister for the go-ahead goal with under six to play.
In the final two minutes of regulation, Mike Brusa hooks Will Sammons giving the Redwings a power play.
And that sets up this, eight seconds remaining, center ice face-off, not enough time right? Wrong! Mitch Plonka ties the game with one-tenth of a second remaining sending this game to overtime!
And in the overtime session Josh Tumpane puts a shot on goal, puck loose in front of the net, and Tumpane puts home the rebound! The resilient Redwings find a way to win and advance to the state final four.
