Six state championships since 2006 for legendary coach Robert Smith and Simeon Career Academy. Benet Academy, playing in Peoria for the second time in three years. The Redwings lost the championship game to Whitney Young in 2014.
A slow start by both teams, but Jack Nolan picking up the Redwings with a three pointer to give Benet an early lead, going up 10-8 after the first quarter. Simeon with division one players up and down the roster, showing why they’re the heavy favorite, junior Evan Gilyard knocking down three three-pointers in the second helping the Wolverines to a one-point lead at halftime.
Redwings with a never-say-die attitude all year long, reclaims the lead early in the third with a layup and free throw by James Dockery. A three point contest in a sense broke out in the quarter, as each team traded knocking down the long range jumper. Jack Nolan drained his third three of the game giving Benet a 42-41 lead heading to the fourth.
In the final quarter, Redwings down two, Benet turns to its captain Dan Sobolewski for a big-time three, putting the Redwings back on top. Not only can he make jumpers, he can block shots. Sobolewski denies Gonzaga-commit Zach Norvell from a potential game-winning layup and the Redwings hold on to advance to the state championship game against Curie.
