Benet Girls Basketball Looks to Get Back to State

In the last 6 years, the Benet Academy girls basketball team has made it to sectionals. Of those last 6 years, they made it to the big stage twice in back to back appearances in 2015 and 2016 defeating Fremd in both games.  Now why is this important? Because the seniors who don the white and red uniforms now were freshman in 2016.

Senior Lauren Stack talks about her state experience, “My experience, going down state as a freshman, that’s something that I want for this team and I want for these girls. It was one of the coolest experiences of my life so I think if we take it one game at a time and just focus on the present we will be fine.”

So far so good.  Now I already told you that they made it to the sectional round of playoffs this year, continuing their trend… they did that by just narrowly beating Simeon in the Regional Final, but before the playoffs began, they had another goal in mind Stack says, “It’s our goal to win conference and we are just focused on that.”

So check that off the list… The Redwings went undefeated in conference and then started moving through playoffs until they found themselves in in regional final game. Once that plaque was hoisted, they were grateful that the ride wasn’t over yet.

Senior Captain Clara Prasse talks about the regional game, “It definitely was a roller coaster of a game. They’re a phenomenal team and we were down most of the game. Our team is really resilient and we really put in the effort and battled back and I could not be more proud of our team.”

Stack adds, “I think our group of seniors has definitely helped. We’ve played, me, Ashley, and Clara, have all played with each other since like 8th grade, so we know how each other plays. We know how to work together and I think that’s huge, having seniors who know how to play together to lead your team so our seniors are huge for us this year and I’m really glad I could be one of them.”

So now their path continues to the sectional round where their first battle will be against Whitney Young but if these senior can reach back into their memories of just 3 years ago Benet Academy may be home to another state trophy.. making that 3 in the last 6 years.
