When it comes to tackling the problem of hunger in our community, one Naperville family is saying “Yes, we can!”
Naperville resident Patty Lindstrom and her children Sasha and Vaughn have started a canned food drive to feed those in the area that go to bed starving every night.
“I felt like I needed to help them because they shouldn’t have to live like that,”said Vaughn.
The family has reached out to their Boy and Girl Scout troops, local church and businesses, and even Mayor George Pradel to collect canned meals, primarily soups, for Loaves & Fishes, Hesed House, and DuPage Pads.
“He said, ‘This should become a community wide fundraiser.’ And you know Mayor Pradel. You can’t say no to him so we said, ‘Ok, we can do this,’” said Patty.
Hence they’ve decided to call their efforts “Yes, We Can.” Vaugn came up with the name of the drive, which expresses their determination to end hunger.
To spread their message and garner support, the family started posting flyers around town and are even collecting canned goods outside of Dominick’s every Saturday of the month.
Not only does it help feed a family, but Yes We Can also teaches kids the value of giving back.
“I feel warm-hearted and I know I’m helping someone who needs the help,” said Sasha. “It’s kind of fun because you’re seeing all the people that want to help them and you’re all working together to make their life better than it is right now.”
For those who’d like to contribute, Yes We Can has designated specific dates and sites for dropping off a can of soup: September 28th and October 19th at both of the local Fair Oaks dealerships, Safety Town, and the Naperville Development Partnership office downtown.
The food drive will culminate with a donation to Hesed House, Loaves & Fishes, and DuPage PADS at the annual Soups On fundraiser on October 20th, which has raised more than a half of a million dollars since beginning five years ago.
The group also has a Facebook page. Visit wwww.facebook.com/YESWECANendhunger for more information.
