Back in December, Tim and Rose Messer won tickets to a Saturday Night Live dress rehearsal in New York City to be taped on January 19th. When they realized that was the weekend of the Presidential Inauguration, they decided to try and include a trip to Washington D.C. while on the east coast.
“I emailed Senator Durbin and Congressman Roskam and checked to see if they had any leftover tickets and of course it was very last minute and I really wasn’t expecting to get any tickets at all,” said Tim. “I expected we would have to be out with the huge crowds further down at the National Mall.
But just days before the ceremony, they got two golden tickets to the 57th Presidential Inauguration and joined more than 800,000 others in attendance.
“It’s quite amazing to just be there in person. Its so much different than watching it on TV,” said Rose. “It’s like listening to your favorite album versus going to a concert. It’s like that times a million.”
The Messers were close enough to see the platform, and were able to catch every moment of the celebration.
“I thought it was just amazing to see the crowd reaction to just the things the President said,” said Rose. “When the President was talking about equality for example, the crowd just sort of surged when he started talking about equality for women and gays. It was just quite awesome to see everybody coming together for these important causes.”
“It was great to see Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce and James Taylor performing all these patriotic songs and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir as well,” said Tim. “It’s one of those events that really does make you proud to be an American and happy to witness this piece of history.”
After the speech, the inauguration concluded with a luncheon, a parade and the Commander in Chief’s Inaugural Ball.
