Winter Car Care

Before you hit the road, be sure to check your vehicle’s fluids. Get an oil change when required, and make sure you have enough antifreeze and gas so you can get to your destination safely.

“Many different reasons to have that, if you get stuck on the highway you want to have a little bit of a reserve, new fuel pumps on a car can run anywhere from $700 to $1,000 and when those fuel pumps don’t have a lot of gas in them, they can cavitate and damage. It’s very important to have your tank sitting at a quarter tank, minimum,” said Matt Weber of Clark’s Car Care.

While winter specific tires aren’t needed in our climate, you do want to make sure the air pressure in your tires is set.

“Tire pressure, no matter how good of a tire you have on a care if it is over filled or under filled it is not going to work well in dry, wet, or even snowy roads. Keep that tire pressure set,” said Weber.

Letting your car warm up before putting it in drive isn’t a requirement for newer cars, Matt says it doesn’t hurt either.

“There are a bunch of different opinions out there about this, but my professional opinion is let it run for a few minutes, let those fluids start going, there are sensors on cars now and if you don’t let it warm up the car ends up using more gas,” said Weber.

Things to keep in your car just in case; jumper cables, a flashlight and phone charger.
