Will County Court House

Will County has been slated to get a new courthouse.

Downtown Joliet will be home to the over $150 million structure, which is being made possible by a partnership between Will County and the city of Joliet.  City officials agreed to pay $500,000 annually for the next 20 years, along with waiving $2.3 million in permit fees.

The new courthouse will go up at the First Midwest Bank site on Ottawa and Jefferson Streets, property the county bought last year. It will replace the current building, which was built in 1969.

Instead of the existing 23 courtrooms, the new facility will have 30 to 36, to better process the 80,000 cases that are handled each year.

The project won’t begin until 2017 or 2018, and is expected to be finished by 2021.
