Waubonsie Valley High School’s homecoming week got of to a running start this morning. The school’s Athletic Boosters and PTA came together to put on the first “Warriors on the Run” 5K.
“We live in a very fitness oriented community,” said Jill York, the Co-President of the Waubonsie Valley PTA and Chair for the Athletic Boosters’ Fundraising Committee. “We thought a 5K would be a really good idea.”
The racecourse utilized the open land behind the school and doubled as a fundraiser for the two organizations.
“We’ll probably raise about $8,000,” said Joan Vitro, Secretary for the Waubonsie Valley PTA and Co-Chair for the 5K. “We’ll split that between the two organizations.”
“We try and find events people are going to be interested in and that are going to be good for students and our school as a whole,” said Jason Schmidtgall, Assistant Principal at WVHS. “With our beautiful grounds we know it’s an event we can host successfully.”
Organizers hope that this will become an annual Warrior homecoming tradition.
