Wake Up Your Spirit

Residents were recently woken up to the growing issue of homelessness in DuPage County.

More than 400 people attended DuPage Pads’ 11th Annual Wake Up Your Spirit Breakfast held at Benedictine University.

The event raised awareness and funds for homelessness in DuPage County.

A former client at the organization shared her success story and Pads’ Executive Director, Carol Simler, shared the highlights of the year, as well as what the group will do in the future to work to end homelessness.

“Our programs are working,” said Simler. “We had over 500 people return to a place they could call home last year as a result of our programs. And we have the solution. The solution is housing, coupled with supportive services and employment. So we know our programs work. We know that solutions exist.”

This year’s keynote speaker was Christopher Kennedy, son of Sen. Robert Kennedy.

He spoke about his not-for-profit, Top Box Foods, which allows low-income families to stretch their food budgets farther.

DuPage Pads’ next fundraising event, the Taste of Hope, will be held in March of 2014 in Glen Ellyn.
