Jerry Hein is a drill sergeant at Longwood Elementary School. But, instead of yelling and demanding push ups, he’s drilling kids on math and reading.
“When they come out I want to make sure they have a good time, because they just want them to be successful,” said Hein. “And as long as I can show them, I don’t care if they get five words out of 25 that’s still a great thing. They still know five words.”
Jerry spends two days a week with each child and keeps detailed records of their progress.
He’s spent two years volunteering at Longwood after working with kindergarten students for seven years.
“Since I’ve been in the school system a while I’ve seen kids in kindergarten and watched them work their way up,” said Hein. “Just having them want to come and learn and seeing them be successful, for me, that’s a great thing.”
Jerry Hein was recently recognized as District 204’s Volunteer of the Month, and to celebrate BMO Harris Bank is donating $1,000 to Longwood Elementary.
