Congressman Bill Foster discussed the issue of gun violence at a vigil to honor the victims of the Dayton and El Paso shootings.
Several Groups Present at Vigil
“There is no substitute for the voices of ordinary Americans in the very important debate and continuing debate on gun violence,” said Foster.
Though he was unable to attend, representative Sean Casten sent a speaker who read a statement on his behalf. Other speakers from area groups also discussed the issues of gun control and universal background checks.
Moment of Silence
The vigil ended with a moment of silence to honor those killed in the shootings.
Foster also said you don’t need to attend a protest to speak on the issue of gun control – contacting your representatives is an effective way to make your voice heard.
The vigil came days after a town hall discussion hosted by newly-formed group Our Safety. Elected officials and community leaders sat on a panel at the 95th Street Library t0 speak on the issue and answer questions from the audience.
