The Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs gave one former soldier a special gift this holiday season. Naperville resident Jack Amberg was honored as December’s Veteran of the Month. Amberg served for 26 years in the U.S. Army reaching the ranks of Lieutenant Colonel.
“I accepted the award and behalf of all the other veterans,” said Amberg. “There is only 12 months in the year and they all cant be recognized and yet each and everyone is special. Very important that they all receive that recognition.”
But it is his service outside the army that earned him the award.
He’s the senior director of the veterans’ program at the McCormick Foundation at Cantigny Park. He is active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. He is also a den leader for Cub Scout Pack 513 and a coach for his son’s football team. As a West Point graduate Amberg added that next year will be the year that Army’s football team finally beats Navy.
