Will County is taking a stand in the fight against heroin.
Last year Will County was second only to Cook County in terms of deaths related to heroin.
53 overdose deaths was a wake up call for county executives, who put forward a plan similar to DuPage County’s.
One part is education – hosting monthly forums, and inviting the Robert Crown Center to visit schools and share their heroin prevention program.
Another is active training of their officers to utilize NARCAN, a drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.
And a third component is keeping close watch on gateway drugs – like prescription drugs, which could be found in the home.
“You need to clean your medicine cabinets out and take away the temptation for these kids, you need to talk to them and tell them how dangerous this drug is,” said Larry Welch, a Will County Executive.
Will County’s next heroin forum is April 29th.
