Soon this barren strip of land will be a thing of the past, after Marquette Companies carries out a plan ten years in the making.
Construction on the “Water Street District” has begun on the 2.4-acre site, which will include a boutique hotel, retail space, offices, restaurants and a 524-space parking garage. Which is just what this side of town needs according to Marquette Companies’ C.E.O. Nick Ryan.
“It’s going to bring a new vibrancy to this entire side of downtown, it’s going to connect the Naperville Settlement fully to the city, it’s going to bring a lot of out of town guests to the city through the hotel and we just feel it’s going to be the anchor to the South side as Main Street Promenade is to the North,” said Ryan.
Despite some concerns over the years from residents about the impact the large buildings will make on the Riverwalk and surrounding areas, the city feels they took the right steps to see the project through.
“I’m very happy with the final product that we have out there,” said Bill Novack, Director of Transportation Engineering and Development Group with the City of Naperville. “I believe as a development team has stated as it’s evolved over the years, the City Council members challenged them to come up with a project that includes different elements they thought would be great for the community and the final product does reflect that.
The developers plan to have the $93 million project finished by the Fall of 2016.
