Recent high temps have many residents concerned about how to stay safe in the summer heat.
With the heat index reaching the 100’s, safety is a top concern, especially when it comes to those who may not be able to care for themselves.
“Be a good neighbor check on your neighbors, the elderly. Don’t leave your kids or pets in the car. Share water bottles and make sure everyone is getting a good breeze and lots of water,” Dr. Rangala of Edward Hospital.
Experts also recommend not being outside during peak hours. But if you have to be outdoors for long periods of time, be sure to wear light colors and fabrics, avoid alcohol and caffeine and try to catch a break either in a cooling center or in the shade whenever possible.
“If the heat really builds up, you may notice early signs of heat stroke such as fatigue, dizziness, if your output decreases or gets dark these are all signs you really need to hydrate and if those signs continue it could cause kidney damage and you could go unconscious so then you would really need to come in,” Dr. Rangala.
The city hosts multiple cooling centers in buildings such as City Hall, local libraries, and park district facilities.
