The arrest and death of Sandra Bland of Naperville has created a firestorm of controversy and provoked an ongoing investigation.
The 28-year-old was pulled over in Prairie View, Texas on July 10th for failing to signal a lane change. During the traffic stop, she was arrested for assault on a public servant, after an officer claimed she had kicked him. Three days later, she was found hanging in her cell, in an apparent suicide.
Bland’s family and friends have questioned the events surrounding her death, and an amateur video as well as the dash-cam recording of the traffic stop and subsequent arrest have prompted a full investigation. The officer who arrested Bland has been put on administrative leave for not following proper procedure during the traffic stop.
The FBI is supervising the investigation, which is being led by the Texas Rangers. Their findings will be presented before a grand jury.
