Remodeling on the Rise

Home sales were up almost five percent in 2009. But there is another number on the rise, home renovations.
But is remodeling worth the mess?
The Rehak family here in Naperville didn’t want to sell their home, but they were ready for a change.

“We knew our house was structurally sound,” said Dabney Messer-Rehak. “We also are in a great location, just blocks from downtown Naperville, so we didn’t want to move.”

Renovators say, like the Rehaks, most families decide to renovate instead of move.

“They love the neighborhood, they love the school district, and their kids have friends in the neighborhood,” said Keith Druek, President and CEO of Seabreeze West Remodeling, Inc. “So I think for them the best thing is to remodel instead of uprooting a whole family and moving to a different neighborhood.”

The National Association of Home Builders says new figures indicate an increasing demand for services. Realtors say with the tightened credit market more families are looking at remodeling instead of buying a home.

“If they have the availability to stay in the home 2-3-4 years, they should see the value return to them. It becomes a good, profitable move on their part,” said Jack Persin, Broker/President of Ryan Hill Realty.
While 67% of homeowners choose to remodel themselves, renovators say even the handiest of handymen need to be careful.

“There are many things about remodeling that the average person doesn’t know,” said Druek. “Use a professional company. The jobs going to be done correctly, you’re insured through the whole project in case something happens to your home, and you’re going to have a more quality product in the long run, instead of someone who’s going to sell cheap, install cheap and leave.”

No matter how you go about it, remodeling one of your biggest investments will keep your house feeling like a brand new home.

The National Association of Home Builders projects the number of home renovations to continue to increase throughout 2010.
