Pool safety can easily be overlooked, but the Kroehler Family YMCA recommends a quick refresher before diving in.
“I would definitely say when you first go to a facility, if you have not been there before, finding out how deep the water is in certain places and asking ‘do you have life jackets?’ and ‘what other options do you have?’” said Tracy Gray, Aquatics Director at the Kroehler Family YMCA.
Parents are encouraged to stay within an arms reach of their children and supervise them at all times.
“As an adult, if you’re not comfortable in the deep water, not letting your children in the deep water if you’re not able to go with them is really important,” added Gray.
It’s also important to swim with a buddy, even if there’s a lifeguard on duty and swim to your comfort level.
Other ways to stay safe include walking around the pool and only diving in designated areas.
