At District 203 officials have made the ruling that coach-led prayer is not appropriate.
The district released a statement saying as much, after a complaint was filed against Naperville Central High School by the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
The group had lodged the complaint after some football players and coaches were seen praying before a game on November 14tth, an action innocently documented by a Naperville-area photographer.
The head football coach, Mike Stine, was later informed that he could no longer lead the team in prayer.
The statement released by the district goes on to say: “Naperville 203 represents a diverse community that holds diverse beliefs and values. It is important that in our roles as school leaders we respect those diverse beliefs and avoid putting students in situations that may conflict with their personal beliefs.”
The Freedom From Religion Foundation is based in Wisconsin, and seeks to protect the constitutional principle of separation between church and state nationwide.
