Naperville firefighter-paramedics William Kostelny and Benjamin Bezaire were awarded the Illinois Firefighter Medal of Honor and certificates of recognition from State Senator Michael Connelly and State Representative Grant Wehrli at a ceremony in Springfield.
The two were recognized for their selfless acts of courage after they rushed into a burning building in December to rescue three people.
“Hours after that call, we didn’t really think about it until people were really like hey, you guys almost died there, and then we started thinking about it afterwards, but when you’re doing it you’re not thinking ‘this takes courage, this is heroic, you’re just doing your job,’” said Bezaire.
“We don’t really have to communicate, we can just jump in and it’s nice to be able to rely on someone like Ben, to get through a situation like that, probably a once in a lifetime career call,” said Kostelny.
The Illinois Firefighter Medal of Honor is the highest accolade possible that can be given to an Illinois firefighter for an act of courage while on duty.
