Information entered on a computer or cell phone can now be used to save lives in Naperville by giving 9-1-1 dispatchers vital information before an emergency strikes.

It’s part of the NaperSAFE program in Naperville, which includes the Naper Notify system, Smart 9-1-1 and Medic.

Many are aware of Naper Notify, the mass notification system that allows the city to give residents information about road closures, police activity and outages. But the other two work by having residents give the city information about their particular needs in advance of an emergency situation.

“You go online to smart 911.com and you actually set up what’s called a safety profile. It can include things like the layout of your homes, number of bedrooms, if you have children, if you have a medical condition. Why you do that and why it’s so important is you can actually tag it to a registered phone number and if you were to call 9-1-1 from that registered phone number, that information would show up on the 9-1-1 call takers screen,” said Kate Schultz, Communication Specialist with the City of Naperville.

Medic works in a similar way, but instead of a phone number, pertinent health information is registered to a resident’s address and then sent to the dispatcher when an emergency is called in.

“It’s great if you or your family has special needs, physical or cognitive impairment, if you have a need for uninterrupted power at your home during an emergency. If you register with medic, you actually have that info given to the city and it also pops up on the 9-1-1 call takers screen,” said Schultz.

Information collected through Smart 9-1-1 and medic is then relayed to rescue teams who then have a better plan of action when responding to the call.

“For us to be able to deliver seamless care from the time of getting 9-1-1 to getting right to the patient, as quickly as we can, a lot of times that can make a difference and in the cases of a stroke or a heart attack, time is muscle or time is brain too,” said George Hyland, Bureau Chief of Community Services with the Naperville Fire Department.

Medic registration is done by visiting the Fire Department and filling out a form that must be updated yearly.
