Renato Velasquez will be spending three years in prison, after being found guilty on three felony counts, including operating a commercial motor vehicle while fatigued and failure to comply with hours of service requirements.
In January of 2014, Velasquez struck two vehicles with his semi, resulting in the death of a toll way worker and severe injuries to a state trooper.
At the time, Velasquez worked for Naperville trucking company DND International. Evidence presented at trial showed that he had been on the job for 27 hours prior to the crash, in clear excess of the amount deemed safe to operate his semi.
Three years is the maximum sentence for a crime of this nature. Velasquez must serve at least half of it before becoming eligible for parole.
