Governor Rauner, along with local elected officials joined together at Naperville’s Municipal Center to announce four bills that would consolidate local government and allow for more control of local communities.
Similar to Naperville’s discussions to collaborate with the township, the proposed legislation includes the Citizens Empowerment Act, the DuPage County Consolidation Powers Expansion and a Township Consolidation Bill.
All would work to remove unnecessary units of government and consolidate to control taxpayer costs.
“We need to change the focus, higher tax rates or fewer services, no. It’s about empowering tax-payers and our competitiveness and our economy and shrinking the government bureaucracy so we can put the money into our schools and our social services,” said Bruce Rauner, Governor of Illinois.
Rauner noted that the four bills only address eight of the 27 recommendations that the Task Force on Local Government and Unfunded Mandates recommended, but they will continue to draft bills for the rest.
The Task Force on Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandates report came out in December.
