The community recently gathered along the Riverwalk to recognize Veterans and raise awareness for their struggles.
The Bernard Coffey Veterans Foundation here in Naperville gave out free nutritious meals to vets in an effort to boost their health.
“73% of our veterans and at a growing rate are overweight or are obese and are on medication, so we’re out here trying to provide healthy meals for our veterans and our military and our community at large,” said Bernard Coffey, Founder of the foundation.
Local Veterans and their families, along with Councilwoman Becky Anderson gathered to address those issues, which was greatly appreciated by those who attended.
“Financial problems, unemployment, and helping them out over those humps is really going to make a difference in their lives,” said Allen Lynch, Vietnam Veteran. “Giving them a healthy meal, you can talk employment and education, but until you have a full belly it’s hard to do those things.”
