District 203 First Day

While most of us remember what its like to be a student on the first day of school, Naperville News 17’s Natalie Vitale wanted to see what it was like for the superintendent.

So she caught a ride with 203’s Dan Bridges as he kicked off the 2014 school year.

“I love the first day of school, and seeing the excitement on the kids faces and the teachers faces there’s just so much excitement and energy,” said Superintendent of District 203, Dan Bridges.

Our first stop for the day; the bus yard. Before many students even wake up, Bridges delivers doughnuts to the bus drivers, something he’s done since his start as superintendent in 2012.

“It’s a special treat from me to them, letting them know that we are thinking about them and they are an important part of making our students feel welcome. So I try to get in there really early before a lot of them are in and get the doughnuts out and ready for them and let them know they are an important part of what we do,” said Bridges.

From sweet treats for the drivers to a classic for the staff, District 203 recently went through a branding make-over, changing their logo from a red apple globe to a green apple so to celebrate the change, Bridges brought every principal a granny smith apple.

“I thought it would be a nice touch today when visiting all of the schools, drop off that apple as a reminder of continuous improvement and growth and balance with tradition and all the things that make us excellent,” said Bridges.

Up next, Naperville North High School, to witness one of bridges favorite customs in the district.

“The seniors gather before the school day begins and kind of celebrate the start of school and welcome the underclassmen with a parade of sorts,” said Bridges.

Then it was off to our last stop of the day, Ellsworth Elementary, where we saw how parents get back into the swing of things.

“So our next stop is Ellsworth Elementary School and their tradition every year is parent coffee. Its to invite the parents in and help them get reacquainted and have them be apart of back to school as well,” said Bridges.

Welcome back District 203 students, parents and staff and remember only about 150 school days until next summer.
