Recently Naperville area gas stations have seen a spike in prices, averaging around $3.23 a gallon, that’s about a 50 cent increase from just a month ago.
Beth Mosher, AAA Chicago Spokesperson says the rise is somewhat expected around this time of year, but there are other issues also at play.
“Right now, two major refineries are having some maintenance issues, so they’ve lowered their production and that’s actually what we’re seeing as the price spikes, we can’t say how long this is going to last,” said Mosher.
While prices are up, they’re nothing compared to previous summers, in fact they’re the lowest we’ve seen since 2010. Last year’s prices around this time were close to the $4 mark.
Mosher estimates that consumers have already saved an average of $400 this year due to the lower gas prices.
