Teaching With Technology

Administrators from District 203 gave the board an update on the Digital Learning Initiative that rolled out earlier this year.

“I would say that all you have to do right now is walk into one of our high schools and you will see the Chromebooks out. You will see a level of engagement and collaboration that is different than the past,” said Jennifer Hester, Chief Academic Officer at District 203.

Currently, every 203 high school student has a Chromebook, totaling 6,500 computers issued. An additional 850 Chromebooks have been distributed to various classes at the junior high level, in preparation for every junior high student receiving one next year.

At the elementary schools, there are 274 iPads and 278 Chromebooks in circulation as part of a pilot program designed to see what technology works with each grade level.

So far, the roll out is going smoothly.

“Overall, out of the near 8,000 devices deployed, we’ve seen 52 screen tickets, 20 keyboard issues, 50 tickets related to connecting to the Internet, which were resolved,” said Roger J. Brunelle, Chief Information Officer at District 203.

And at the 204 Board meeting, the district celebrated the strides they have taken in communication technology.

Almost 93% of parents gave the district the grade of ‘A’ or ‘B’ on being community focused. That’s thanks in part to the district’s social media presence.

“You can definitely see the growth of our Twitter followers. The 8,750 number represents the number of Twitter followers that we hit at the end of June. Even in the past four months we’ve picked up almost 500 more followers. So, I think that we’re on target to hit 10,000 followers this school year, which to us is pretty amazing,” said Janet Buglio, Executive Director of Communication Services at District 204.

Another way 204 keeps the community in the loop is the IPSD 204 app, which was launched last year and has already reached 12,000 downloads.

And on the web, the district has introduced, where folks can check out the latest board meeting, or see videos highlighting events held at the schools.
