Tea for two… or just for you, the Tea House in Naperville is a place anyone can find the perfect cup of tea. The owner of Tea House, Dan Robertson, began his search for the best cup of tea seventeen years ago.
“I had this idea to do a documentary on tea in China,” said Robertson. “I think I went to one tea house too many and I saw such a beautiful tea ceremony and beautiful surroundings. I realized these are very nice people.”
After that trip Robertson opened the Tea House in Naperville. The company imports teas and is a wholesaler for tea shops all around the country.
“I believe to understand the tea you have to understand the culture that produced it. Otherwise, it’s just something you pull out of a box,” said Robertson.
Robertson says one of the best parts of his work is teaching customers about creating the perfect cup of tea. As a purist, he promotes using tea leaves versus tea bags saying leaves provide better flavor.
“Use the right water temperature, the right amount of time and water for your cup,” said Robertson. “Remove the leaves from the water or pour the water out of the leaves. That’s all you have to do and you will have a good cup of tea every time.”
The biggest growth in tea consumption has come in the form of bottled ready to drink products. Robertson says they change the way Americans think about all types of teas.
“I find more and more people interested in good tea. They want to find out where it came from or who made it,” said Robertson.
Robertson is only too happy to help others get started on their own quest for the perfect cup of tea. He hosts world tours which take international travelers to tea-houses, production companies and farms. His next tour is set for September and will explore Chinese tea culture.
