Hotel Arista was recently packed with medical professionals learning about the condition that one in every three children in DuPage County is at risk for: obesity.
The medical community met once more for the second of two conferences this month to promote the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.
The goal of this most recent summit was to build a foundation for a healthier community by taking a look at the impact obesity has on learning within our schools and share tools to reverse the obesity trend.
The keynote speaker at the conference was Mayor of Oklahoma City and 2010 Public Official of the Year Mick Cornett.
“Obesity is a problem in the United States. It was especially a problem in Oklahoma City,” said Cornett. “We had designed a city where life revolved around the car and we’ve started to rethink it, what if we designed the city around people, instead of cars? How would that change the way we design our streets, our bridges, and our schools?”
The conference was sponsored by the Forward Action Network, an anti-obesity initiative of the DuPage County Health Department.
