State of 203

As part of the District’s Focus 203 Community Engagement Initiative, administrators held their State of the District address.

Superintendent Dan Bridges shared enrollment projections, changes in the District’s demographics and some points of pride for 203.

“The national recognition our two high schools have earned and the individual accomplishments by our students are truly symbolic of the whole educational system in our school district and exemplify the partnership among our students, staff, parents and the community,” said Bridges.

Community members were updated on progress with the District’s Focus 20/20 Strategic Blueprint, which included the first round of Chromebook implementation, changes in science curriculum and a long-term STEM plan.

Bridges also discussed how the State’s uncertain financial situation could affect the District.

If Senate Bill One is passed, reallocating State funds to other districts, 203 would lose nearly $10 million in annual revenue.

And it a proposed pension cost shift goes through, $9 million that the State is currently putting in to teacher pension funds would become the responsibility of the District.

Luckily, just over seven percent of the District’s budget comes from state funding.

“As you know our school district is primarily dependent on local property taxes for our revenue. In some ways that’s a blessing for us, because as the state struggles financially, it allows us to be a little bit more nimble in how we respond to those challenges we face,” said Bridges.

After learning about the District, attendees got to have hands on experience with the new Chromebooks and Google apps for education, using the technologies to provide feedback to administrators.
