“Spontaneous” Art Exhibit

If the idea of attending a fine arts exhibit is not exactly your cup of tea, think again. That’s what the Naperville Art League hopes you do.

The League’s new exhibit is called “Spontaneous,” and organizers are hoping to showcase the fun and passion of bringing an idea to life through fine arts.

Angela Graefenhain is one of the exhibit’s artists, and while she is a part time teacher and interior designer, her true love is painting.

“I just try to come up with kind of significant but uplifting themes in my work,” said Graefenhain. “I hope that it gives that feeling to other people.”

Graefenhain is a member of the Art League, which has promoted understanding and appreciation of art in the community since 1961.

“I think it’s amazing when you look around and see how much talent is right in your own backyard,” said Deborah Venezia, Executive Director of the Naperville Art League.

That talent is celebrated in the League’s current exhibit at North Central College. “Spontaneous” refers to the expression of catching a moment in time, and that can come in the form of realistic or abstract pieces.

“I do paint pretty spontaneously. I don’t plan a whole lot,” said Graefenhain. “In fact, the piece that’s hanging in the show, I wanted it to look a little ‘off.’ A little bit immediate.”

“I think people need to sort of get rid of that stigma about art and being stuffy,” said Venezia. “People always say, ‘Well I don’t really know anything about art.’ You don’t have to know anything about art. If you look at a piece and it speaks to you or if you have an emotional response, it doesn’t matter.”

Not everyone who created work for the exhibit is a full-time artist, but their work certainly displays a full-time passion.

“You have people who are teachers and lawyers and business people, and they do this stuff on the side,” said Nickole Lanham, the Gallery Director for North Central College. “There’s a lot of talent out there.”

And that is talent these artists are happy to share with the community.
