District 203 once again hosted their community engagement series, Focus 203.
At this session, the emphasis was on social and emotional learning, or SEL, something identified as a priority for 203 students during the 2013 Focus 2020 initiative.
“The Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning, or CASEL, defines social and emotional learning as ‘the competencies students need to integrate skills, attitudes and behaviors to effectively and ethically manage daily tasks and challenges,’” said Assistant Superintendent for Student Services with District 203, Dr. Christine Igoe.
At the session, district administrators presented on 203’s progress in the area of SEL, starting in kindergarten with students working to identify and manage their emotions. And going through high school, where students analyze how their emotions affect decision-making.
While many classrooms have already begun implementing social and emotional learning, this coming school year will have a full curriculum rollout.
Attendees also got the opportunity to give their feedback on the curriculum and any additional resources they feel are needed.
