Legislators still haven’t come together to reopen the government.
The partial government shutdown has furloughed around 800,000 government workers, slowed down benefits to veterans, and shut down national parks and monuments.
But, one thing is deemed an essential service and remains open: the Congressional Gym and Spa.
Rep. Bill Foster, who represents parts of Naperville, has proposed the Shutdown Prioritization Act (SPA), which removes the gym from the list of essential House services.
“For some reason I don’t understand Speaker Boehner has deemed the gym and spa an essential service,” says Foster. “At the same time essential services are being cut off to millions of people around the country.”
Democrats and Republicans have started to work towards a compromise that would raise the debt ceiling for a short period.
There still isn’t any word if Speaker Boehner will bring up a clean continuing resolution that will reopen the government.
