You don’t have to wear shoes made of silver to participate in SilverSneakers, a fun exercise program designed for older adults.
The participating seniors want to step into a healthier way of life. They do so by taking advantage of the SilverSneakers program offered at the Kroehler and Fry YMCA’s in Naperville.
Member Chester Grabowski said, “Everyone tells me I look great so I have to believe them. I thought I looked good before, but now I look great!”
Taking control of your life and health is now a manageable task for the participants of SilverSneakers. As a part of the fitness program, the organization offers classes, advisors and health education seminars for its members.
Kim Monti, the SilverSneaker’s Senior Advisor at the Kroehler YMCA said, “The seniors are a large part of the community… and it really just keeps them involved, keeps them active.”
Seniors on some Medicare health plans have access to a free membership to SilverSneakers as well as the participating fitness center hosting the program.
“I’m not going to do the 4 minute mile…but we just do our exercises as best we can,” Grabowski said.
There are over 300 members age 63 to 86 that take part in SilverSneakers here in Naperville.
“Many people in my class, people who have had strokes, heart attacks, they still go out and shovel their driveway in the winter and they are proud of that, they feel good about that,” said Monti.
For members who can not reach a facility offering the program, steps can be taken online at silversneakers.com to achieve a healthier lifestyle.
