Senior Dogs in Naperville

12-year-old Mable was abandoned by being thrown out of a car in Bolingbrook, but thanks to Lizzy’s fund and the Naperville Area Humane Society, she was given a second chance at life.

“Bolingbrook Animal Control picked her up and they deemed her to be unfixable because she has a heart murmur she had severe orthopedic problems so we picked her up and with wonderful care from a foster family who eventually adopted her and phenomenal care is now a valued member of her family,” said Bernie Slupik, Co-Founder of Lizzy’s Fund.

Many senior dogs like Mable often end up in shelters for no fault of their own possibly due to their age or upkeep in cost, which is why Lizzy’s Fund, which pays for vet bills, adoption, and grooming for senior dogs, has stepped in to provide assistance and remind people of the benefits of getting an older dog.

“A senior dog you know what size they are you know their personality type so if you’re looking for somebody to just sit on the couch and watch football with you know what you’re going to get or if you want a dog that’s more active that’s going to go on walks with you or play outside with your kids you really know what you’re going to get with a senior dog which is nice,” said Anna Payton, Executive Director of the Naperville Area Humane Society.

And the popularity of getting a senior dog has been seen locally at the Humane Society who says that the length of these dogs staying in their shelter has decreased by ten whole days, with the help of Lizzy’s Fund.

After hearing about the success at the shelter, author of “My Old Dog,” Laura Coffey, came to visit town and even pitched in copies of her book to hand out to those who adopt senior dogs.

“They’re wonderful pets they make such great companions later in life and there are so many happy success stories of people who did take an older animal and it changed their lives forever and so the book is a very happy collection of stories of people who did this ranging in age,” said Coffey.
