Self Defense: The Basics of the Block

The public and black belts alike gathered at Sharkey’s Karate studio on Saturday to learn self defense. Participants were taught protection basics, and every-day moves.

Since 1967, Sensei Ray Boyer has trained everyone from CIA agents to your ‘average Joe’ the importance of basic self defense. For the past eight years, Ray has taught self defense at the local gym, and is a Certified Reserve Police Officer. He taught three free courses at Sharkey’s Karate studio, one for children, one targeting specific occupations, and the final course for women.

“Because of their size differential, women have a disparity of force on their side,” said Sensei Ray Boyer. “An overwhelming person could come to them with no weapons on hand and still permanently injure them. They should have the right to protect themselves.”

But self defense isn’t just for women. Men also need to learn the techniques behind the block.

“I’m trying to get people to the point where they can protect themselves and get away. It’s not about fighting or training MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) but it’s about protecting myself and possibly my family and trying to get away,
says Sensei Ray.

Among other moves, Sensei Ray drilled his pupils on the art of the Twist and Turn, Safety Position, and Block. With these moves, Sharkey’s own students have garnered multiple black belts as well as 7 Warrior Cup Championships, the nation’s top martial arts honor. Each position is helpful and easy enough for myself, as well as other participants to learn.

“It was a great class for self defense. I learned some very easy moves to get me out of a situation I don’t want to be in,” said Jennie, a local Defense Attorney.

Naperville may be a safe town, but you can never be too careful.

“People don’t realize there is crime in Naperville and we want to be ready,” explained Mary Browning, a Community Education Specialist at the Naperville Police Department. “Also you have to realize that people in Naperville do go to surrounding areas and go to Chicago and travel. It’s good to know how to take care of yourself wherever you are in whatever situation.”
