The DuPage African Methodist Church’s annual Diversity Institute focuses teaching children to exercise diversity everyday through a day-long session.
This time around, the day will be titled the ‘Sandra A. Bland Diversity Institute’ as a way to honor her commitment to connecting with the community.
“One thing that Sandra Bland did often was respond to any civic endeavors that would happen and awareness in the community. She did that did her blogs and as a member of the church a lot of people followed that blog,” said Lamounte Coleman, Organizer of the Sandra A. Bland Diversity Institute.
This year’s theme is “Valuing Our Village” and will focus on getting children ages five to eighteen to be civically engaged just as Sandra did herself.
Bland’s death became the subject of controversy when she was arrested at a traffic stop in Texas back in July and later found dead in her jail cell.
The Texas state trooper who arrested Bland has since been indicted and fired.
