The attack in Boston now has organizers for the upcoming Naperville Marathon rethinking safety.
To date, the race’s directors have focused primarily on keeping runners and spectators safe from traffic and any possible extreme weather conditions.
But the Boston Marathon explosions have them considering measures to keep folks safe from additional threats as well.
“It’s just heightened the awareness and obviously we have to make sure our runners feel comfortable, that people feel comfortable bringing their families along,” said co-director Craig Bixler. “That’s always a big part of a marathon. You want your family and friends there to share it with you.”
Craig Bixler has ran the Boston Marathon himself in 2006 and 2009. While he doesn’t have all the answers yet, he plans to meet with the police department and other city services each month to discuss additional safety measures.
The Naperville full and half marathon kick off on November 10th.
