Run, run as fast as you can. You can catch these gingerbread men in downtown Naperville this winter.
25 gingerbread men will be painted and put on display for the upcoming holiday season.
The Downtown Naperville Alliance is providing the 52-inch tall sculptures to be sponsored by local businesses, including the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Main Street Promenade, and Naperville Magazine.
Each costs $1,500. The money allows the gingerbread men to be delivered, painted, glazed, and insured in case of vandalism or weather damage. Much of the proceeds will fund this year’s holiday parade on Sunday, December 1st.
The idea for the public art fundraiser came from United Way. For several years they provided sculptures nationwide for a similar cause, and now for the second year, the Downtown Naperville Alliance is bringing the project back. Last year’s sculptures were snowmen.
“There’s a variety of holiday sculptures so we thought this would be a fun theme to involve our stores. We will probably do a “catch me if you can “ type of theme within our businesses over the holiday season and we just think they are adorable and they lend themselves to a lot of great painting opportunities and we are involving our schools this year,” said Katie Wood, Executive Director of the Downtown Naperville Alliance. “A lot of schools have stepped forward and our students in the Naperville community will be painting many of these.”
Not all of the gingerbread men have owners yet. To purchase one, contact Katie Wood with the Downtown Naperville Alliance at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“It’s all going for a good cause and it brings a lot of enjoyment and hopefully a lot of people to downtown Naperville to shop over the holidays,” said Wood.
The completed gingerbread men will appear in downtown Naperville on Friday November 8th.
That same day, the Christmas lights will switch on in downtown for the holiday season.
