Almost every little girl dreams of being a ballerina when she was younger, and for one Naperville Central High School Senior this dream is about to come true.
Kat Wiersum is one of the 144 people who were chosen for the new Joffery Ballet School Jazz and Contemporary Trainee program in New York. This road to Joffrey was everything she hoped for.
“When I was a little kid I always wanted to be a ballerina,” said Kat Wiersum.
Even as a toddler she dreamed of toe shoes.
“Her first birthday cake was a ballerina bear,” said Kat’s mother, Nancy Wiersum. “She just loved everything about it. She would study the books, she knows the stories of the ballets and she was always taken away with it.”
18 years of rehearsals, sore muscles and sacrifice paid off. Kat will dance six days a week at the Joffrey learning new styles and techniques to perfect her performance, but leaving home is something she is trying to prepare for.
“People are looking at me like the guinea pig,” said Wiersum. “I am the first one who is going off, the first one who is doing things and everybody is looking at me.”
For Kat that pressure is something she can handle.
“We think she is ready and mature enough,” said Nancy Wiersum. “ She has always thrived and gravitated in an urban environment.”
Kat feels she is working for what lies ahead.
“I know if anything happens it’s going to happen there,” said Kat Wiersum. “New York is the heart of the whole dance world and everything comes from there.”
No matter what shoe Kat might put on… she knows is that her family will be there to help her every step of the way.
