While it may seem like just another typical health-club, this gym is revolutionizing the fitness industry.
Aptly named “Eco Gym”, it utilizes state-of-the-art devices to benefit both members and the environment.
When using cardio equipment like this treadmill, you’re actually generating power to the entire building, shredding not only body fat but the electric bill as well.
“These are all powered by yourself so when you’re on here doing these, it’ll capture the kinetic energy,” said Co-Owner and General Manager, Sonny Benso. “When that kinetic energy’s captured, it’ll go back into the grid & then pushes back into the city of Naperville.”
And the more electricity you generate, the more it pays off.
“What we do is we reward our members for that. When they come in – the more times they work out, the cheaper their dues get,” said Benso. “The cutting-edge equipment doesn’t stop there; trainers will capture the finger prints of new members when they sign up, who will then place a finger on a biometric scanner to enter and exit.”
“Just by using your finger, it makes it more personal instead of using a scan card that you could possibly give to somebody and now you’ve got somebody coming to the facility that you don’t know so we wanted to try & make this facility as secure as could be,” said Benso. “More than 150 members have already signed up. Several say they’re excited for Eco Gym’s new technology.”
“So many people exert so much energy in the gym every day and Eco Gym were the people are smart enough to take that and utilize it,” said Jeremy Sylva. “It’s a great idea, great concept and I hope they keep going with it.”
“I know it takes a lot of electricity to run the fans, run the lights so I don’t think they’ll ever make a net positive but if they can offset some of the energy uses a little bit, it’s a step in the right direction,” said John Ostrander.
“It’s great that somebody had the idea and is implementing that and it’s great that we get to be apart of that here so I enjoy it a lot,” said Revti Kaura.
The gym also has private therapy rooms and soon to come a hyperbaric chamber.
But at the end of the day, it’s all about fitness. The gym has a cap on the number of members so that trainers can focus on one-on-one instruction.
“That’s the biggest thing – when you come into a gym, you wanna make sure you’re getting results,” said Benso. “The only way we can make sure everyone’s getting results in here is if we know everybody.”
