February 25th marked the 30th anniversary of one of Naperville’s most memorable murder cases.
In 1983, ten-year-old Jeanine Nicarico was abducted from her home, raped and killed.
In 2009 a DuPage County jury sentenced Brian Dugan to death for the murder of the young girl. As the death penalty was later abolished in Illinois, Dugan is currently serving a life sentence in prison.
Nicarico’s spirit lives on in the community. Construction is underway for the Jeanine Nicarico Children’s Advocacy Center in Wheaton.
And in 1996, the Naperville Education Foundation created the Jeanine Nicarico Memorial Fund for Literacy which provides grants for both District 203 and 204, promoting a deeper understanding and teaching of literacy.
On June 1st the NEF will host the 12th annual Run for Reading, which raises money for the memorial fund.
