This week Navistar completed the last major move-in to their new headquarters, the old Alcatel-Lucent building in Lisle. To celebrate their new home, they invited several members of the community to help them celebrate.
“It’s a tremendous, tremendous day for this region,” said Michael Connelly, State Representative for the 48th District. “Navistar being here is going to, I think, be a part of an economic rebirth for the high-tech corridor in Naperville and Lisle so it’s very exciting.”
During the event, Navistar employees shared the commitments they made to the area when they decided to move and how they’ve lived up to them.
That included bringing jobs to the area, including 3,000 employees on the campus, 500 contractors, and 2,000 union trade members.
“Go back two years there was nobody in this campus,” said Don Sharp,
Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Navistar. “Every one of those people is generating revenue and tax dollars.”
Realtors report that they’ve sold more than $50 million worth of homes to
transferred Navistar employees. Company officials said those new residents will be spending money in retail and at restaurants. They also expect several thousand hotel rooms to be booked every year.
“From the financial aspects of it, to the jobs, to our businesses being boosted by all the additional employees, the benefit of having them here and this is a pride of our community as well,” said Tom Althoof, President and CEO of the Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce.
The company has also made a commitment to invest in the local community. They announced that this year they’ll be a sponsor of Lisle’s Eyes to the Skies Festival and the main stage sponsor for Naperville’s Ribfest.
“Navistar has been a tremendous corporate citizen here in the community,” said John Schmitt, President and CEO of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce. “They really have been invested in many, many not-for-profits. They’ve supported many of our community efforts and things like that, so we really appreciate what they’re doing to invest in our communities.”
As they move forward, Navistar plans to become more green. They recently announced a partnership with Clean Energy Fuels Corp. that will provide customers with natural gas powered trucks.
